Akpabio Appeals to Tinubu to Reconsider Police Withdrawal From VIPs, Warns of Security Risks
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the recent directive ordering the withdrawal of police personnel attached to VIPs, warning that the decision could expose lawmakers and public officials to serious security threats.
President Tinubu had directed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to withdraw police officers from non-essential duties, including escorts assigned to VIPs, as part of efforts to curb the misuse of security personnel.
However, Akpabio raised concerns over the policy while delivering his welcome address during President Tinubu’s visit to the National Assembly on Friday for the presentation of the 2026 budget.

According to the Senate President, several lawmakers fear that the withdrawal of police escorts could make it unsafe for them to return to their constituencies, especially amid prevailing security challenges across the country.
As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas, some members of the National Assembly said I should let you know that they may not be able to go home today,” Akpabio said.
“They could be exposed to danger. On that note, we plead with you, Mr President, to kindly review the decision.”Earlier in his remarks, Akpabio acknowledged that insecurity continues to test Nigeria’s collective resolve, noting that many communities remain affected by violence, banditry, and other criminal activities.He emphasized that Nigeria’s progress depends on unity and cooperation among arms of government, stressing that history shows nations advance when the executive and legislature work together in the national interest.
The Senate President reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to partnering with the executive to strengthen security frameworks and protect Nigerians nationwide.
Akpabio’s appeal comes amid growing debate over how to balance the need to prevent abuse of police personnel with the responsibility of ensuring adequate protection for public office holders in a challenging security environment.
