Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Chelsea, disputes the idea that a successful football manager needs to win trophies, maintaining that coaching is about being successful and competitive.
The Argentine’s lack of trophies during his tenure in England with Southampton and Tottenham has often cast doubt on his status as one of the best football coaches, but he feels there are other elements that his detractors have overlooked.
The 51-year-old stated, “That is not how I would evaluate a coaching staff.”
“The goal is to be successful and competitive, but there are too many influencing elements.
“I don’t think [winning on Sunday] will make me more popular or change how the fans will perceive us.”
The Chelsea manager continued, reflecting on Jurgen Klopp’s accomplishments as a manager, saying, “Klopp was good before he arrived at Liverpool.” He’s now the Premier League and Champions League winner.
Being at the right place at the right time, with the proper tools and the accountability to win, with a team that believes in you, is what matters.
